No one would ever know, Roxanne, I tell myself as I slowly ease out of bed.
Of course, no one would ever guess it. James would never own up to it. Most importantly, it’s for a good cause. The ends justify the means. Natural conception, natural birth, a natural baby.
I pause when I get to the door and rest my head against it. I’ve already talked with James about this. Earlier today, I tried to have an open conversation with him while Clark was at work.
“James, no one will ever know. It’s just a few minutes. I know how to make it happen quickly. Just close your eyes and-”
“You’re marrying my dad,” James had answered seriously. “My dad.”
“Just think about it. A real sibling for you.”
He’d opened his mouth to say something, shook his head, then backed off slowly, like he couldn’t even find the words to properly say no because it should have been obvious from the start. I understood. I’d backed off. I hadn’t pushed.
But the thought is now lodged in my head.
I’ll simply have to be more … persuasive when it comes to convincing James that this is the best way for all of us. He can forget a few moments. He can say that it’s just a dream. He won’t talk about it and I won’t talk about it.
